According to the CDC, flu seasons vary from year to year.

Federal health officials say that the flu is now widespread in Alabama - and it's expected to increase. Designing the correct immunization against flu means guessing which strain or strains will be the big ones, and then making an effective deterrent. The agency estimates that between 6.2 and 7.3 million people had been sick with the flu as of January 5, and about half of them had seen a doctor because of it.

"People get lulled into the idea that [influenza] is not as serious as it can be, especially for those most vulnerable", Dr. Russell said.

The Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) has already advised people to take precautions to protect themselves from the flu.

While states such as California and North Carolina have seen significant numbers of flu-related deaths this season, US health officials said Friday that the nationwide impact of influenza seems to be milder than last winter.

These estimates are cumulative and will be updated over the course of the annual flu season on Fridays.

Of those who sought medical care, 69,000 to 84,000 people have been hospitalized, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Three preschoolers have died in Saskatchewan as a result of the flu so far this season, according to the provincial health ministry. Antiviral drugs are the second line of defense against the flu, and anyone who are ill or are have high risks for flu complications are recommended to see a health care provider early on in the illness so they can be treated with the said drugs.

"It is important to remember that, even if a patient gets the flu after receiving the vaccine, it is not usually as severe as if the patient had not received the vaccine at all", Durham wrote.

Flu vaccines are offered at many doctor's offices, clinics, local health departments, pharmacies and college health centers, as well as by many employers and some schools.

Smaller provinces do keep count, although official numbers typically only capture a subset of flu cases.

In New Brunswick, where no children have died with a lab-confirmed diagnosis of influenza, the virus still seems to be targeting a younger demographic than in the last few seasons.
