This is part of the company's previously announced 15 percent workforce reduction that was announced back in November.

As of Sunday afternoon, it was unclear which jobs or departments would be affected by the expected layoffs, or if salaried workers in the remaining Ontario GM plants - CAMI Automotive in Ingersoll and the St. Catharines Propulsion Plant - would be impacted.

As federal workers across the country struggle to regain traction after the government shutdown, General Motors workers are bracing for layoffs set to start next week.

When GM CEO Mary Barra made the announcement, she met with legislators on Capitol Hill about why her company planned to close four American plants.

The automaker says it has largely completed salaried job cuts in Canada, and most of those threatened with layoff here have accepted an incentive package to leave.

"These actions are necessary to secure the future of the company, including preserving thousands of jobs in the USA and globally", GM said in a statement Monday. GM said in November it would end US and Canadian production of the Chevrolet Cruze, Volt, Impala, the Buick LaCrosse and the Cadillac XTS and CT6 sedans.

Morrissey said GM would provide salaried workers with severance packages and job placement services.

GM Canada president Travis Hester has said the future of cars is electric, rather than internal combustion.

Many of GM's hourly workers in the United States and Canada have held protests and prayer vigils in a campaign to persuade the automaker to reverse its November 26 GM announcement to indefinitely idle five plants in North America. Now, 4,000 more will be laid off.
