LG's G8 will have a 3D selfie camera

Here's LG's Response To Face ID

Here's LG's Response To Face ID

If all works as advertised, the LG G8 ThinQ could deliver that same confidence with its Time-of-Flight-enabled face recognition system.

What the hell is a ToF image sensor, you ask?

Rumours suggest LG will unveil a 5G V-series smartphone at Mobile World Congress, alongside a handset that users can attach a rear-facing display.

Time of Flight technology is something that we are seeing more and more in smartphones. It's a Time-of-Light (ToL) sensor that can be found on the front facing camera.

For the uninitiated, Infineon is a manufacturer that makes 3D sensors, and by partnering with several OEMs, more high-end devices getting launched will be able to sport 3D cameras.

The result should be quick and accurate face recognition in all conditions.

LG and Infineon's technology is not affected by external light sources and can thus be more consistent recognition in any light level. On top of that, we also expect better AR features than what Apple has to offer with their TrueDepth camera.

"Keeping in mind LG's goal to provide real value to its mobile customers, our newest flagship was designed with ToF technology from inception to give users a unique and secure verification system without sacrificing camera capabilities", said LG Mobile's senior vice president and head of product strategy Chang Ma said. This speed means that ToF is usually used for biometrics (face unlocking) but it also means that AR and VR capabilities on a phone are also vastly improved.

While LG naming its next flagship device the G8 shouldn't be much of a surprise, there has been some speculation that the South Korean company will re-brand its G series.
