Including a camera in the stylus and producing a phone with a beautifully seamless screen could be an extra selling point.

It could be to allow you to write on paper using the S-Pen, while the camera records your doodles and uploads them to the cloud.

Currently, the S Pen on the Galaxy Note 9 lets you use it has a camera shutter for clicking photos. Samsung explains in the patent that smartphones typically employ digital zoom, but in the process of enlarging an image via a program or algorithm, the overall quality of the images takes a hit.

What is truly impressive is that Samsung's camera-laden S Pen will have support for optical zoom whose mechanism will be controlled by an external electronic device that may be a smartphone, notebook or a monitor.

Spotted by PatentlyMobile, the next-gen S Pen could come with a superior camera with optical zoom functionality.

In short, we don't know what Samsung's got planned, but we do know the stylus-cam is intended for a Galaxy Note phone specifically. While FIG. 4B confirms that Samsung intends to put such an S-Pen in a future Galaxy Note device, Samsung also outlines that slots could be put in future laptops or computer displays for storing the S-Pen.

"The electric pen device includes a control board configured to interact with an electronic device and a communication module configured to communicate by wire or wirelessly with the electronic device, so that an image or a picture taken by a camera is confirmed and an optical zoom is controlled from the external electronic device", the patent reads. The battery in the current S-Pen can last around 30 minutes or 200 clicks, whichever comes first. And if the camera is good enough, imagine how stable your videos could be when you're holding a pen that only weighs an ounce or two. This is all in addition to taking regular notes.
