Canadian Gets Life Sentence for Killing 6 in Quebec Mosque Shooting

ISLAMOPHOBIA Court in Canada sentences man to life in prison over 2017 mosque shooting

A Canadian man who gunned down six people in a mosque in Quebec City in 2017 was sentenced to life in prison with no parole for 40 years, CTV reported on Friday.

The sentence has yet to be determined by the judge, Superior Court Justice Francois Huot, but Huot said in court that this mass-murder "will forever be written in blood in the history of this city, this province, this country".

Alexandre Bissonnette pleaded guilty last March to six charges of first-degree murder and six of attempted murder.

In March, Bissonnette admitted to killing Khaled Belkacemi, 60, Azzedine Soufiane, 57, Abdelkrim Hassane, 41, Mamadou Tanou Barry, 42, Aboubaker Thabti, 44, and Ibrahima Barry, 39, in the January attack.

"(The decision) does seem unusual, but it's also very consistent with what some judges are saying, not just about this section, but about sentencing and the larger discussion about these sections in the Criminal Code", she said. His sentencing is ongoing in a Quebec courtroom today.

The Crown said it will take the time to study the 246-page decision before deciding whether to appeal.

"Time goes by quickly", he said.

As the judge read a detailed account of the shooter's actions, several people in the Quebec City courtroom wept.

A university student at the time of the shooting, Bissonnette appeared to have been seduced by nationalist and supremacist ideologies into committing this "unjustified and deadly" massacre that sought to "undermine our fundamental societal values", the judge said.

Huot noted that witnesses at his sentencing hearing testified that he had been severely bullied in school and had a documented history of mental health problems.

The 2017 shooting incident described as one of Canada's rarest mass shootings which Prime Minister Justin Trudeau denounced a "terrorist attack", provoked debate over new arrivals at a time when a growing number of migrants moved from the U.S. into Quebec.

However, that minimum sentence of life in prison with no parole for 25 years is exactly what the defence is calling for.

The Criminal Code was amended in 2011 to allow a judge to impose consecutive sentences in cases of multiple murder, but it was clear as Huot spent almost six hours reading the decision that he was wrestling with the constitutionality of the provision.

But other judges have rejected calls for consecutive sentences, including the Toronto judge who on Friday sentenced Bruce McArthur to life in prison with no parole for 25 years for murdering eight men with ties to Toronto's gay village.

In 2011, Canadian law was amended to allow judges to impose consecutive sentences instead of concurrent 10- or 25-year sentences with no parole eligibility, for multiple murders.
