All medals at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be made from recycled waste after organisers revealed they were on track to reach their target of collecting enough metals.

This creates a significant supply for collection and Olympic medal formation.

The Tokyo Organising Committee said Friday that the goal of collecting over 30kg of gold has been nearly completed, with the necessary amount of precious metals expected to be gathered by the end of March.

"The project entails precious metals such as gold, silver and bronze being salvaged from discarded mobile phones and other small electronic devices, and recycled for the production of medals to be awarded to athletes at the Tokyo 2020 Games", the organizers said.

NTT Docomo stores began accepting old gadgets to recycle on behalf of the program, and collection stations were enacted in various public places in Japan.

Japan has almost hit its goal for collecting e-waste that will be used to create the 2020 Tokyo Olympics medals, officials have announced.

The recycled metal has been collected from the Japanese public as well as businesses and industry.

By November a year ago, municipal authorities had already collected 47,488 tonnes of discarded devices, with the public handing in another five million used phones to a local network provider. Some 2,700kg of bronze had already been extracted by June 2018 and by October there had been 28.4kg of gold and 3,500kg of silver extracted from the donations.

Britain, which has never won a medal in Olympic basketball, claimed 67 medals, including 27 golds, at the 2016 Rio Games.
