Edinburgh weather: Storm Erik to bring 70mph gusts and heavy rain

Yesterday video footage of a pram being dragged into oncoming traffic on a busy Dublin road during Storm Erik has emerged. Part of a doubledecker bus in Poole, Dorset, was crushed by a felled trunk and a road in south Belfast was closed when a number of branches fell on the bonnet of a vehicle.

A wet and windy start to the weekend has been forecast, with Storm Erik bringing winds of 70mph to some areas and heavy rain across large parts of the UK.

The warning of high winds gusting at up to gale force will last for the whole of Cornwall and all but the very North East of Devon - over Exmoor - until 8pm today.

He also wrote on Big Jet TV's tweet, "It's a particularly challenging day at #Heathrow with gusty winds".

BBC News NI weather presenter Cecilia Daly said that Erik was the sixth named storm of the season. The wind warning along the south coast of England lapses on Friday evening but a wind warning extends over more of England into north Wales during Saturday.

In Yorkshire, the Ouse Bridge on the M62 and the Humber Bridge on the A15 were closed in both directions to high-sided and vulnerable vehicles.

By mid-week, conditions are expected to be milder and more settled as high pressure dominates, keeping severe weather fronts at bay.

Although the wet and windy weather was expected to ease, further hard conditions were forecast.

Things should be slightly calmer in England and Wales, where sunny spells are expected.

"However, further north, another weather system is affecting parts of northern Scotland and Northern Ireland, rain and hill snow here".
