Skipper Rohit Sharma scored a brisk 28-ball half-century to lead India's chase of 159. Kane Williamson and Colin Munro tucked into Khaleel and two fours to Williamson off Hardik Pandya took New Zealand to 40/1 after five.

India celebrate the fall of a wicket.

It was a much-improved performance by the Indian bowlers with Bhuvneshwar Kumar removing Tim Seifert (12) in the third over inducing an inside edge to Dhoni behind the stumps.

Rohit Sharma became the highest run scorer in Twenty20 worldwide history Friday as India romped to a seven-wicket win over New Zealand in the second T20 in Auckland.

The short boundaries notwithstanding, New Zealand persisted with two spinners - allrounder Mitchell Santner and legspinner Ish Sodhi.

Rohit and Shikhar Dhawan added 79 runs for the first wicket before Rishabh Pant played an important knock to help India avenge the humiliation of first game. India chased down the target in 18.5 overs. However, when the DRS showed the ball hitting all three wickets the verdict for lbw was upheld by TV umpire Haig, to Williamson's shock.

The final match of the series is at Hamilton on Sunday.

Such a result wasn't a surprise - India had not lost back-to-back twenty20 clashes in a series since 2015, and it was always going to be hard for the Black Caps to back up their record win in the series opener. But Sodhi had the last laugh when Rohit -after completing his 16th T20I fifty - was holed out in the deep in the deep in the 10th over. They came into this game to win and that's what they ended the game with. "It was slightly more tricky to bat, but 20 more runs at the death would have been better", said New Zealand captain Kane Williamson.

NEW ZEALAND: Tim Seifert c Dhoni b Bhuvneshwar 12 (12b, 1x4, 1x6), Colin Munro c Rohit b Krunal 12 (12b, 1x6), Kane Williamson lbw b Krunal 20 (17b, 3x4), Daryl Mitchell lbw b Krunal 1 (2b), Ross Taylor run out 42 (36b, 3x4), Colin de Grandhomme c Rohit b Hardik 50 (28b, 1x4, 4x6), Mitchell Santner b Khaleel 7 (8b), Scott Kuggeleijn (not out) 2 (2b), Tim Southee b Khaleel 3 (3b); Extras (lb-1, w-8): 9.

The young Indian bowling has been tested but the likes of Krunal Pandya and Khaleel Ahmed's performances so far will give the team management some assurance.
