Childish Gambino's searing "This is America" became the first hip-hop track to win a song of the year Grammy on Sunday, while Lady Gaga dominated the early awards and former USA first lady Michelle Obama made a surprise appearance at the event.

Beck was a double victor during the pre-telecast, taking home best alternative music album and best engineered album (non-classical) for "Colors".

At almost the two-hour point of the show, country duo Dan + Shay seemed ebullient when they announced Drake's name as victor for best rap song.

Gaga, who is to perform later on Sunday, said on Twitter she was "in tears with honour and gratitude". "Thank you for being my island", she said.

Childish Gambino, Tori Kelly and Lauren Daigle won two awards each. "And I am not hung up on what happens or doesn't happen", she said. In addition to other general field categories, Glover, Drake and Lamar all earned record of the year nominations for This Is America, God's Plan and All the Stars, respectively.

But this year, Monae is looking forward to the show, where women are now leading in nominations for big categories like album of the year and best new artist.

Women have a strong presence in the top categories.

But the Grammys are just the latest accomplishment for the Korean boy band this year.

H.E.R., Chloe x Halle, Margo Price, Dua Lipa, Bebe Rexha and Jorja Smith are also up for best new artist.

Lady Gaga's hit song "Shallow" from the movie "A Star is Born" won two Grammys, while the musician-turned actress took a third Grammy home for her "Joanne (Where Do You Think You're Going)", which won for pop solo performance. He later acknowledged that it was a "poor choice of words", and it forced the academy to launch a new task force focused on inclusion and diversity.

As for other ways to watch the Grammys, you can also tune into American network CBS.

Brandi Carlile and Kacey Musgraves swept the boards in their respective genre categories, Americana and Country, making the ones to beat in the night's main category - album of the year.

"When they don't take home the big prize", he said, "the regard of the academy, and what the Grammys represent, continues to be less meaningful to the hip-hop community, which is sad".

The show will be hosted this year by 15-time Grammy victor Alicia Keys.

In addition to performances by of-the-moment stars like Gaga and Cardi B, icons like Parton and disco diva Diana Ross will take the stage. There will be awkward moments, but a planned tribute to Aretha Franklin, which will be performed by Yolanda Adams, Fantasia and Andra Day, had better be one to remember.
