Lindsey Buckingham is recovering after undergoing emergency open heart surgery, his wife confirmed.

It was not clear, she said, if the vocal damage would be permanent.

Kristen informed fans all shows and tours have been put on hold for now while Lindsey "gathers the strength to heal completely". She noted that the family shared its story in hopes that it would inspire others to seek preventative care.

"This past year has been a very stressful and hard year for our family to say the least", she wrote. "As does he. He looks forward to recovery and putting this behind him", she added.

His wife then took a moment to spread awareness of heart disease, saying that Buckingham's father and brother died from heart-related illness. It's with great relief and thankful hearts that we report the surgery was successful in its objective.

Fleetwood Mac are no stranger to bust-ups, and Buckingham was sacked from the group following a falling-out a year ago with fellow band member and former girlfriend Stevie Nicks at the MusiCares Person of the Year gala. We will never forget you'.

Fleetwood Mac legend Lindsey married Kristen 18 years ago and they also share three children together: son William, 20, daughter LeeLee, 19, and another daughter Stella, 14.

As a solo artist, Buckingham has released six studio albums and has recently embarked on a promotional tour for his new three-disc set "Solo Anthology: The Best of Lindsey Buckingham".
