His speech shouldn't be restricted, because his lifeblood is writing and speaking about politics and fashion, his attorneys say. He also deployed the classic "I'm less famous than Kim Kardashian" defense.

The judge was assigned Stone's case because of its relation to a hacking indictment case in which she also presides.

His attorney pointed out that Stone's career is writing about politics and he is familiar to those following the U.S. politics, but argued that the consultant is "hardly ubiquitous in the larger landscape of popular consciousness".

Stone objected to the proposal via his attorneys, arguing that public comment on politics and men's fashion is his job, so a gag order would interfere with his ability to earn a living.

U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson is considering issuing a gag order in Stone's case to prevent any impact on potential jurors.

They requested that his criminal matter be randomly reassigned to another judge, because they say it was unfairly lumped together with a case that special counsel Robert Mueller brought against 12 Russian military intelligence agents for allegedly hacking the Democratic Party and Hillary Clinton presidential campaign during the 2016 election. US intelligence agencies have said that Russia was the source of the hacked material, and previous year Mueller charged 12 Russian intelligence officers in the hacking.

In filing later Friday, prosecutors said they wouldn't oppose Jackson issuing a "narrowly-tailored" gag order that seeks to keep Stone from using media coverage to his advantage in the court case.

Prosecutors said the two share a common search warrant, and "there are activities which are a part of the same alleged criminal event or transaction", according to Stone's filing.

"I want to recognize and I think it's important that this defendant has a legitimate interest in exercising his First Amendment rights", she said at the hearing.

In one extra punch Friday, Stone's attorneys said prosecutors got his name wrong when they indicted him.
