But as more people entered the workforce last month the province's unemployment rate edged up 0.3 percentage points to 4.7 per cent between December and January, according released Friday (Feb. 8) from Statistics Canada.

Analysts in a Reuters poll had forecast a gain of 8,000 positions in January and an increase in the jobless rate to 5.7 percent from 5.6 percent in December.

The region with the lowest rate in Alberta is Red Deer at 4.4 per cent while the province's overall is 6.8.

In December of a year ago, the unemployment rate was listed at 4.5%. Stephen from 7.1 to 6.5, Fredericton-Oromocto from 7.9 to 7.7 and Edmundston-Woodstock from 7.4 to 7.3.

Last month, the rate was at 5.4%, nearly a full percentage point jump.

The unemployment rate in the Montreal region was down slightly in January from the month before, falling below the level in Toronto once again.

Provincially, unemployment climbed to 6.8 per cent from 6.4 per cent in December 2018.

According to Statistics Canada, there were 18, 873, 900 people working last month across all of Canada, with 1,162,000 people unemployed.

"In January, the number of employees increased by 112,000 in the private sector, while it was little changed in the public sector for the third consecutive month. That blew past expectations for a modest 5,000 gain", said Royce Mendes, an economist with CIBC Economics.

The Bank of Canada has been monitoring wage growth ahead of its interest-rate decisions as it tries to determine how well indebted households can absorb higher borrowing costs.

She said the struggles of energy-producing provinces, which began with the late-2014 oil slump, have been a big factor that has dragged down national wage-growth numbers.

Canada added 30,900 full-time jobs last month and 36,000 part-time positions, the report also said.

Decreases were recorded in the goods-producing industries, most notably in agriculture.

"Volatility returned with a notable increase in employment during the month of January", he wrote.
