Special weather statement issued, calling for significant winter storm on Tuesday

A Winter Storm Watch has now been issued for the region, along with a large area of Iowa and southern Wisconsin from 3 PM Monday through 9 PM Tuesday.

Meanwhile on Sunday, snow flew across much of the Northland, with the National Weather Service office in Duluth recording 2 inches by 6 p.m. How about as rain?

Winter storm watches are issued when multiple types of severe winter weather are expected to occur together.

On Tuesday morning, a winter storm with significant snow, freezing rain, and strong winds is expected to move into our area.

Precipitation will turn back to snow Tuesday night as colder air returns in the wake of the low pressure system.

Environment Canada says to avoid travel if possible, with rapidly accumulating snow causing potentially hazardous conditions.

Snowfall amounts of 25 to 30 centimeters and blowing snow are forecast for Tuesday, and into Wednesday.

We're expecting at least an inch of snow overnight before the precipitation freezes up.

The North Shore and areas west of Interstate 495, however, are primed to receive more. The service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for most of MA during that time.

Northern suburbs and northwestern suburbs stand the greatest chance of getting maybe 1 to 2 inches of snow.

And what if this storm's a dud? A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the entire state for a period of snow, followed by a change to wintry mix and rain.

Light snow started to make its way into the interior lowlands in the late afternoon, the weather service said.
