On Feb. 11, 1979 Iran's army declared its neutrality, paving the way for the fall of USA -backed Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.

"The US should know that we would raze Tel Aviv and Haifa to the ground in the event of a military attack on us", General Yadollah Javani, head of the guard's political bureau, was quoted as saying.

A senior commander in Iran's Revolutionary Guards said Tehran would not withdraw its forces from the region, dismissing USA calls that Iranian regional influence should be curbed.

Imam Khomeini had lived many years in exile, in Iraq and France, before returning home and leading a historical revolution that overthrew Pahlavi regime.

Hundreds of thousands of Iranians gathered Monday to mark the 40th anniversary of the country's Islamic Revolution.

Hundreds of thousands of Iranians marched and some burned U.S. flags to mark the revolution as Tehran showed off ballistic missiles in defiance of U.S. efforts to curb its military power.

Despite mounting worldwide pressure over the country's missile program, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani vowed to continue to push the development of such weapons.

A senior commander in Iran's elite Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps threatened on Monday to destroy two of Israeli's largest cities if the country is attacked by the United States.

The state has played up this year's anniversary as 40 is symbolic of maturity in the Islamic tradition and the age at which Prophet Mohammed received revelations from God.

The celebrations included several instance of muscle flexing, including the launch and test of new missiles, which would put Israel squarely within precise range of the Iranian armed forces.

"I don't ignore the threats from the Iranian regime, but I'm also not intimidated by them", Netanyahu said in a Hebrew-language video.

Pictures on social media showed some people also demonstrating against corruption, unemployment and high prices.

"We will not let America become victorious - Iranian people have and will have some economic difficulties, but we will overcome the problems by helping each other", he said in a speech.

Referring to Iran as "the Mother Land", Rouhani said that during the rule of "the traitor Qajar dynasty 205 years ago", large portions of lands were separated from Northern Iran and the caucuses.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed the threat. "They would do well to take that into account".
