The Argentinian arrived at United from Real Madrid for a whopping £59.7million - at the time a record signing for a British club.

With PSG superstar Neymar and main striker Edinson Cavani both ruled of the trip to Old Trafford, Di Maria will have an important role to play on Tuesday night.

Di Maria played for Manchester United for a season but fell out with the-then manager Louis van Gaal, leaving the side a year later.

Despite his starring performance, Di Maria was fortunate not to get injured when Ashley Young pushed him off the pitch and into a metal barrier before half-time - a move that drew criticism from PSG coach Thomas Tuchel after the game.

As the PSG players celebrated on the byline, an incensed Di Maria let out his frustration by screaming "F*ck off!" He showed no lack of desire in getting to the ball but it was noticeable that he was often being shadowed by Marquinhos whenever United were in possession, a clear sign of PSG head coach Thomas Tuchel attempting to shackle the World Cup victor.

Later, he blew kisses to the stands and imitated drinking from a bottle that was hurled at him by a fan. One user commented that the player had "turned Old Trafford into a pub".

"I'm very happy. It's always unsafe with him, with corners, and of course a superb assist for the second goal in the open position and with a flawless pass for Kylian".

Di Maria's Old Trafford return was filled with drama and controversy.

There wasn't much doubt which way it was going to go for Angel di Maria.

United's woe was intensified when Paul Pogba was sent off late on in the second half for a second yellow card following a lunge on Dani Alves. He was a bit nervous and needed to be calmer in the first-half. If you tease him, it does not make him weaker.

The end of Di Maria and Van Gaal's relationship wasn't good.

Di Maria was more reserved after the game, posting to Instagram: "Happy for a lovely victory".
