Vaping is erasing gains made against US teen smoking

Public health experts are continuing to sound the alarm on the teen vaping epidemic, tying the 1.3 million increase in teen tobacco users from 2017 to 2018 directly to e-cigarettes. They concluded that heated tobacco vapor and cigarette smoke affected cells at both lower and higher concentration, whereas, e-cigarette vapor showed toxicity at higher concentration. That pushed their overall tobacco use rate from 19.6 percent to 27.1 percent in 2018.

Another growing problem is the popularity of vaping through the use of electronic cigarettes, also known as e-cigs.

"People skip class to vape", said Grade 10 student Sophie Verbake.

The proportion of high schoolers who vaped at least 20 of the past 30 days increased to 28 percent in 2018 from 20 percent the year before, the CDC added.

E-cigarettes are generally considered better than cigarettes for adults who are already addicted to nicotine.

The FDA shares the CDC's concerns about the alarming surge in e-cigarette use among teens. (D-Burlington), a physician who heads the health committee, and John Armato (D-Atlantic) - would amend existing laws to prohibit individuals from completing the delivery of a tobacco product or e-cigarette device to any Garden State residence without first obtaining the signature of a person, 21 years of age or older who lives there. He also said that health agencies such as the Center for Disease Control, warn against vaping because it carries long-term negative health effects.

"These results are strong evidence that e-cigarettes are not helping to drive down youth cigarette use", Myers said.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is cracking down on e-cigarette marketing and sales aimed at teens, but more needs to be done, said Thomas Ylioja, clinical director of health initiatives at National Jewish Health in Denver.

On Monday, Gottlieb expressed concern that e-cigarette manufacturers may be reneging on vows they made previous year to counter teen use. But with the introduction of e-cigarettes, the trend of nicotine uptake is not likely to slow down in the coming years. He also noted that federal law prohibits states from regulating tobacco product transport by truck, which could conflict with the proposal, as drafted. In 2018, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that 1 in 5 high school students had taken up the habit. "I fear this trend will continue in 2019, forcing us to make some tough decisions about the regulatory status of e-cigarettes". Minister Ginette Taylor is proposing a ban on billboards and other outdoor ads for reduced-risk products, as well as a prohibition on advertising in any space where youths are allowed.

"This increase-driven by a surge in e-cigarette use-erased past progress in reducing youth tobacco product use", the CDC said.

"JUUL entered the US market in 2015 and since December 2017 has held the greatest market share of any e-cigarette in the United States".
