Separately, the New York Times reported on Wednesday that US federal prosecutors were conducting a criminal investigation into data deals Facebook struck with more than 150 technology companies such as Amazon.com Inc and Apple Inc. It's believed to be the biggest interruption ever suffered by the social network.

The spike in sign-ups, which was about five times higher than the norm, was likely a result of Wednesday's world-wide outage affecting Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, which are all owned by Facebook, Inc.e was not related to a DDoS attack, but have not yet specified what actually went wrong.

Facebook's desktop platforms and apps were affected in parts of the USA, including the East and West Coast, as well as parts of Europe and elsewhere.

People went on Twitter to vent their frustration about the problems.

Facebook first publicly addressed the issue Wednesday afternoon, acknowledging in a tweet that "some people are now having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps". It also affected people on the West Coast, including in Portland.

"We're aware that some people are now having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps".
