Some mobile apps seem to be working.

"The length of time, plus number of users affected, makes this comfortably the most severe outage in Facebook's history", he said on Twitter".

Downdetector.com has seen a spike in problem reports since about 11:00 CST.

Outages reportedly began around noon Eastern time on Wednesday afternoon.

Outages for large internet platforms like Facebook or YouTube aren't unusual, but in the past they have typically restored service within an hour or two.

"We know this is frustrating, and our team is hard at work to resolve this ASAP", wrote Instagram.

Facebook said in a follow-up Twitter post at 3:03 p.m. ET, "We're focused on working to resolve the issue as soon as possible, but can confirm that the issue is not related to a DDoS attack".

It is not known if this is a planned outage, a problem with their servers, or if the service is under attack.

Users say they are unable to post new messages or like other people's posts.

So of course, people are taking to Twitter for memes and mocking.

It's not just Facebook and Instagram that are down for the count, the social network's ads also are offline.

Some users said it was a reminder not to "have all of your eggs in one basket" when it came to running a business.

Some people are reporting a total blackout of service.

Some advertisers were more concerned by not being able to access Ads Manager.

Some users report that the service comes back. WhatsApp is also affected.

The cause of the interruption has not yet been made public, Facebook, which gets a vast majority of its revenue from advertising, told Bloomberg that it was still investigating the overall impact "including the possibility of refunds for advertisers".
