He got out his vehicle and tried to take a picture of the man who then allegedly fired an arrow at him.

He saw a man known to him standing outside his home armed with a bow and arrow, NSW Police said in a statement.

The arrow struck the mobile phone, penetrating the device and emerged on the other side.

A 43-year-old Australian man's mobile phone was the only thing that stood between him and a pointy arrow during an attack in Australia Wednesday morning, according to police.

A man avoided hospital after being shot at by an alleged bow-and-arrow wielding assailant, with his smart phone absorbing the blow.

By an incredible chance the arrow hit the phone, piercing it but losing enough of its momentum that the tip merely grazed the victim's chin.

He was left with a small laceration that didn't require medical treatment.

The 43-year-old first noticed the alleged attacker - armed with a bow and arrow - in the driveway of his home as he left his auto.

Police later arrived and arrested the attacker, who was aged 39.

The 39-year-old man was charged with assault and property damage offences, and will face a court next month.
