UEFA Champions League Round of 16 Barcelona Hammer Lyon 5–1 Enters Quarter-Final

Lucas Tousart's effort pulled Lyon back into the tie briefly and Messi, who scored Barca's third and then created goals for Gerard Pique and Ousmane Dembele, admitted the Catalans nearly let things get away from them.

Barcelona is seeking its sixth ever UEFA Champions League title and first since the 2014-15 campaign.

We have this idea that they are rivals desperate to one-up another but Lionel Messi has heaped praise on Cristiano Ronaldo following his incredible hat-trick display against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night.

Messi scored two - including a sublime "Penenka" penalty - and laid on two assists as Barcelona hammered Lyon 5-1 in Spain to win their last 16 tie by the same scoreline on aggregate.

"We always knew it would be like this".

Bayern then drew level after Joel Matip inadvertently poked the ball into his own goal in an attempt to prevent the deadly Robert Lewandowski from getting a clear goalscoring opportunity. Messi assisted on the Piqué and Dembélé goals, which broke the game open in the 81st and 86th minutes, respectively.

Messi opened the scoring with an audacious panenka penalty in the 18th minute, before striking a second time in the 78th minute.

But Messi soon eased their nerves, toying with Lyon's defence before releasing a shot too powerful for Gorgelin to stop.

Lyon goalscorer Tousart had little complaint about the final result and said his side were powerless to deal with Messi.

With both Juve and Barca in the hat for Friday's quarterfinal draw, the pair of generational greats could soon cross paths - although Messi said the challenge posed by any of the remaining teams was a tough one. "He has instinctive talent".

Lyon coach Bruno Genesio added: "Tonight Messi was in Champions League mode. Sometimes he is just unstoppable".
