Yet Carlson's radio interviews, which took place between 2006 and 2011, are described by WaPo as his "recent past".

But Carlson's strategy of no apology and no backing down is all part of the "Fox News brand", Aidan McLaughlin, the managing editor of Mediaite, told Cheddar on Wednesday.

The network is navigating controversies beyond Carlson. We have to deal with Fox News.

When asked for comment about whether the network supports Carlson, a spokesperson for Fox News directed Rolling Stone to the comments he made on his show Monday night.

After his show on Tuesday, Carlson's Fox News colleague Sean Hannity commended him for fending off his many detractors, adding that Carlson had delayed a vacation to defend himself on air (though, later, a Fox News spokesman said Hannity misspoke and that Carlson was always scheduled to host his show this week).

Tucker Carlson called into my satellite radio show regularly from 2006-11, and like all my guests, he adopted an edgy comic persona for the broadcast. Fox News representatives didn't immediately respond to a request for comment on the Miss Teen USA audio. The remaining company will include Fox News, Fox Sports and the Fox broadcast network. Fox News has previously said it believes Carlson is being targeted for political reasons.

"Media Matters caught me saying something naughty on a radio show more than a decade ago", he said.

Later, Carlson said, without evidence, that there was a 90-percent chance that pageant host Mario Lopez had sex with Upton after the show.

Threatening to boycott advertisers is nothing new, but it still isn't clear how effective it is.

"We can not and will not allow voices like Tucker Carlson to be censored by agenda-driven intimidation efforts from the likes of Moveon.org, Media Matters and Sleeping Giants", Fox News said in response to the AstraZeneca move.

Carlson has used his show, Tucker Carlson Tonight, to lash out against his critics. In December, several advertisers fled after Carlson said that immigrants make "our country poorer and dirtier and more divided" before juxtaposing pictures of piles of garbage with migrants.
