Eight people dead in Brazil school shooting

In a statement, the state's secretary of education had said that the shooter and another teen who was with him had been taken into custody.

The attack occurred at a school that has more than 1,000 students in Suzano city in the metropolitan region of Sao Paulo on Wednesday morning when two teenagers entered the school and carried out a massive shooting.

Previously, another shooting took place about 450 meters from the school, but it is not known if it is related to the massacre.

That is all the information that is available at this time.

Ten people, including the gunmen, were killed in total, Sao Paulo police said.

Eight people - including six students - have been shot and killed by two hooded men at a school in Brazil.

Brazil is one of the most violent countries in the world with 64,000 murders in 2017, a rate of nearly 31 per 100,000 inhabitants - that is three times higher than the level the United Nations classifies as endemic violence.

Police arrived at the scene about eight minutes after they were called and evacuated the school.

Authorities said five students and an administrator at the school were killed.

The shooting happened at about 09:30 local time (12:30 GMT) when the students were on a break at the state school in Suzano, near São Paulo, according to the BBC.

Gun laws are extremely strict in Brazil, but it is not hard to illegally purchase a weapon. "I opened the gate to my house and I saw children jumping over the school's wall".

President Jair Bolsonaro ran on a platform that included promises to crack down on criminals, in part by expanding public access to guns.

Police work at the scene on Wednesday.

Sao Paulo State Governor Joao Doria said four children and two members of staff were among the dead. "It is the saddest thing I have seen in my life".
