James Gunn is returning to Marvel Studios. In August, however, Variety reported that Disney was upholding its decision to fire the filmmaker, even after an alleged meeting between Gunn and Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn.

Gunn directed the first two Guardians films as well as co-writing 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy and writing 2017's Guardian of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Deadline is reporting that Disney has reinstated James Gunn as the writer and director of Guardians of the Galaxy 3.

After Gunn issued a public apology, Horn chose to reinstate the director. Gunn was sacked last July over tweets from almost a decade ago in which he joked about subjects like pedophilia and rape.

Gunn earlier apologized for the tweets, which he called "unfortunate efforts to be provocative".

Following news of Disney reversing their decision and rehiring Gunn for the third Guardians film, Gunn shared an emotional thank you to all of his fans. In the end, while this can not have been an enjoyable ride for James Gunn, he seems to have emerged stronger than ever: given the reins to two high-profile franchises, now a household name, and enjoying the goodwill of fans and peers. "I have regretted them for many years since - not just because they were stupid, not at all amusing, wildly insensitive, and certainly not provocative like I had hoped, but also because they don't reflect the person I am today or have been for some time", Gunn said in a statement.

Gunn was let go in July 2018 after multiple offensive tweets resurfaced.

"It's not to say I'm better, but I am very, very different than I was a few years ago; today I try to root my work in love and connection and less in anger". "At the end of the day, he was making jokes and he was being provocative and he was looking for that shock value, but they were just jokes. Love you to you all".

After Gunn's dismissal, the entire cast voiced their support for him in an open letter, including Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, and Zoe Saldana, with Bautista threatening to leave the film altogether.

Gunn has since signed on to write and direct the next installment of Warner Bros.' "Suicide Squad" for the Marvel rival DC Comics.
