When John Dorsey signed the OH native earlier this off-season, it was known that Kareem Hunt likely faced a lengthy suspension. The Browns can hold on to Johnson well into October if they wish, add something at a position of need for Johnson in-season, and then get a super-motivated Hunt, playing for his National Football League career on a one-year deal, down the stretch.

The league on Friday cited a violation of its personal conduct policy "for physical altercations at his residence in Cleveland last February and at a resort in OH last June".

"I respect the league's decision on discipline", Hunt said.

NFL Network reported that Hunt has accepted the punishment and opted not to appeal. Now that the suspension has been handed down, Hunt will forfeit $503,529 of his 2019 pay with the Browns.

"He has committed to take advantage of available resources to help him grow personally and as a member of the Cleveland community, and to live up to his obligations as an National Football League player", the statement read.

"I know that my behaviour hurt a lot of people, and I again apologise to them", he said. I'm extremely grateful that John Dorsey, Dee and Jimmy Haslam and the Cleveland Browns organization are granting me the opportunity to earn their trust and represent their organization in the best way possible on and off the field. I'd figure they would keep him in bubble wrap during the preseason games - why risk a season-ending injury to a guy you already know can't play until November, anyway - and then watch Hunt take their offense to another level when the weather turns and the aches and pains of the season become acute and the best teams start to separate from the pack. I also appreciate all of the support I received from my union through this process.

He was placed on the NFL's Commissioner Exempt list that same day, before signing with the Cleveland Browns last month. His suspension will not take effect until August 31, the day of final roster reductions before the season opener.

Hunt was subsequently signed by Cleveland on a one-year deal in February, prompting a widespread backlash against the team.

Hunt's suspension stems from a pair of incidents that took place while when he was a member of the Kansas City Chiefs. The eight-game ban will allow Hunt to return with enough time to accrue a full National Football League season, which will make him a restricted free agent in 2020. He will be entering his third National Football League season.
