Mashud said about 17 Bangladeshi players and team staff on the bus watched as blood-soaked victims staggered from the building. The players and some support staffers were on their way to the Al Noor Mosque, less than a mile from Hagley Oval, when they saw signs of the unfolding carnage. "We have advised the players not to step out". Liton Das and Nayeem Hasan were also back in the hotel and have been contacted, and told to stay back at the hotel. "We have asked the team to stay in the hotel itself", he told reporters.

The incident is said to have taken place at the Al Noor mosque, located in central Christchurch along Dean Avenue facing Hagley Park.

"We have always maintained that this kind of incident can happen to any country".

"We'll demand proper security wherever our team goes in future".

"We are not sure what their security system is".

"I can say that everything will change after this incident".

The team has been in New Zealand for more than a month, playing three one-day internationals ahead of a three-Test series.

New Zealand Cricket chief executive David White said there had been a "joint decision" to call off the third test, which had been scheduled to start on Saturday in Christchurch.

"It's quite unbelievable really". "That is why we feel that the security that countries like Bangladesh gives to other teams when they come to play in Bangladesh, we should also get the similar type of security arrangement or support from the host country".

In a brief statement posted on Twitter, Bangladesh confirmed the team were safe.

Bangladesh cricketer Tamim Iqbal labeled the incident as a "frightening" experience on Twitter.

"W$3 e r extremely lucky", Mushfiqur said. "What has happened here is an extraordinary and unprecedented act of violence".

"They have chosen to make New Zealand their home and it is their home. they are us".

"The Bangladesh team may have prayed at the same mosque before but I don't think they were the target", he underscored.

Mohammad Islam, a journalist travelling with the Bangladesh team, told The Associated Press the team was meeting on Friday night to discuss when they might leave New Zealand. After this, the cricketing body banned worldwide cricket in Pakistan.

New Zealand abandoned their 1987 tour of Sri Lanka following a bombing near their hotel in Colombo in which more than 100 people were killed.

I start running towards the main road, when a lady, also heading out in her vehicle, asks if I need a ride.

"Our thoughts and honest condolences go out to the families and friends of those affected by this horrendous incident in Christchurch", Richardson said.
