New York City police say the man who fatally shot the reputed boss of the Gambino crime family may have staged a auto accident to lure him out of his home.

His murder is the first of a NY mob boss since Paul Castellano was famously assassinated at Sparks Steakhouse in 1985.

According to the New York Daily News, Cali was shot six times in the chest by a someone in a blue pickup truck on Hilltop Terrace at around 9:15 p.m.

Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea said police are reviewing surveillance footage that captured the events surrounding Frank Cali's death yesterday in Staten Island.

Police say there are no arrests and the investigation is ongoing.

Cali himself was jailed for 16 months for his connection to an extortion scheme surrounding an attempt to build a NASCAR track on Staten Island.

Castellano, the Gambino family head at that time, was shot in the street on Manhattan's East Side while on trial for conspiracy to commit murder, among other charges. Gotti's brother Gene Gotti spent 29 years in prison for heroin distribution, but he got out in September 2018, leading to speculation as to what that could mean for the future of the organization.

The reputed boss of New York's Gambino crime family was struck at least six times when he was shot to death in front of his Staten Island home not long after dinnertime Wednesday, marking the city's first mafia don killing in more than three decades. The New York Post reported that Cali had increased the Gambino family's involvement in drug trafficking, particularly in opioids.

Weiss also adds that it's unlikely that the assassination was organized by any other organized crime family that may still operate in New York City as many have aimed to stay out of the limelight in recent years.

"We thought those days were over", Mayor Bill de Blasio said of Cali's slaying. "But I guess old habits die hard".

Pandrella, 59, is accusing of shooting Zito in his own home and stealing money from him - before returning to the scene of the crime hours later to grieve with the older man's family.
