Raonic ends Kecmanovic’s dream run, reaches Indian Wells semis

Canada's Milos Raonic is heading to the semifinals at the BNP Paribas Open.

Austria's Thiem advanced by walkover to face Canadian Milos Raonic, who defeated Serbian lucky loser Miomir Kecmanovic 6-3, 6-4.

Raonic, the No. 13 seed from Thornhill, Ont., fired 13 aces against no double faults in putting away Kecmanovic in 72 minutes on a sunny, windy and cool day in the Southern California desert.

"Even when I was hitting the spots, I wasn't hitting them that well", Raonic said about his serving. "I think that can get better".

At 15-3 this year, Monfils was off to the best start of his career.

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal will be vying to set up a blockbuster semifinal when the play in the other two quarterfinals on Friday. Ranked 130th in the world, the Serb lost in qualifying, but his fortune soon turned. He put only 55 percent of his first serves in play.

Thiem has lost his previous two meetings with Raonic, both in 2016, in straight sets.

That's where Kecmanovic's luck ended.

Andreescu missed a match-point opportunity on Svitolina's serve, but then won the next game to finish it in dramatic fashion, fighting off three break points.

"I knew he had nothing to lose, and I had to be really disciplined with myself", Raonic said.

In January, Raonic beat Kecmanovic in straight sets in Brisbane.

Bencic beat fifth-seeded Karolina Pliskova 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to reach the semis.

Mari Osaka, a year-older than her 21-year-old sister who has shot to the top of the rankings thanks to back-to-back Grand Slam titles at the USA and Australian Opens, has twice played in WTA doubles made draws, most recently with Naomi at the 2017 Toray Pan Pacific Open. "I'm not going to the court with any expectation".

Just as he was playing lights-out tennis, Gaël Monfils's body let him down again. "This is the mentality I have, and this is the mentality I'm going to keep having".

"She changed the rhythm a little bit", Kerber said. She's still playing at such a high level.

She had to fight for the lone break of the second set as Williams saved four break points to hold for 2-2 and saved four more in the sixth game before Kerber finally converted one for a 4-2 lead that would stand up the rest of the way. From the get-go, Kerber made strong in-roads into Williams' serve, especially the second serve and was just as relentless on her own serves.

Williams alternately smacked winners from the baseline and sprayed shots beyond the lines.

Williams' right knee was taped and she did not appear to be moving easily or serving with much pace. "It's always tough to play against her".

Bencic was pushed to three sets Thursday for the first time in four matches at this tournament.

Bencic showed no sign of a let-down after her fourth-round victory over world number one and defending champion Naomi Osaka, out-lasted Czech Pliskova 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Kerber also has a shot to make her first ever final appearance in a Premier Mandatory.

Reigning Wimbledon champion Kerber meanwhile reached the Indian Wells semi-finals for the third time with her win over Williams in a battle of former world number ones.
