UK opposition Labour: lawmakers must reject PM May's Brexit deal

391 MPs voted against the deal with 242 MPs voting for it.

Mr Corbyn countered by saying her Brexit strategy is "in tatters" and her deal is "dead", before criticising Mrs May for having "refused to listen".

The opposition will initially focus on opposing no deal - which is expected to be defeated on Wednesday - and believes that an extension to the March 29 deadline is inevitable because more time is needed to negotiate an alternative, the Guardian reported.

Conservative leader Mrs May has granted Tory MPs a free vote.

Under a temporary scheme 87% of imports by value would be eligible for zero-tariff access - up from 80% at present.

The potential move, which could lead to another general election in a bid to break the impasse at Westminster, comes as the prime minister all but lost control of the Brexit process following Tuesday night's defeat.

Her exchanges with Corbyn involved the Labour leader repeatedly urging the prime minister to outline a new plan for Brexit, and to consider backing the Labour proposal, under which the United Kingdom would stay in some form of customs union. "That's why MPs must reject this deal today", the politician noted.

On Wednesday morning the government announced that most imports into the United Kingdom would not attract a tariff in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

Some of her colleagues around the Cabinet table think it shows she has to tack to a closer deal with the EU.

The decision to drop all checks to avoid friction at the UK's land border with the European Union will be temporary while longer term solutions are negotiated.

May responded: "The deal that he's proposing has been rejected several times by this house". "Tonight she's not even showing the leadership to whip on no deal".

'The Government is in real problems because they are trying to fool the people into somehow believing that somehow or other the deal she has offered is the only one that is available'.

Earlier in the day, British MPs also rejected another amendment that sought to delay Brexit until May 22 by extending the Article 50 of the EU's Lisbon Treaty.

Its chief negotiator Michel Barnier said the European Union "cannot go any further" in trying to persuade MPs to back the agreed terms of exit and the United Kingdom had to break the impasse.

A No 10 spokesman said she did not discuss resigning after her latest defeat because her government had recently won a confidence vote in the Commons.

Tory Brexiteer Peter Bone (Wellingborough) asked Mrs May to back the Malthouse amendment, which aims for the United Kingdom to leave the European Union without a deal but also secure a transition period until the end of December 2021.

Crispin Blunt said: "They should have resigned".
