GM announces jobs, electric vehicle after Trump criticism

General Motors Chairman and CEO Mary Barra makes the announcement Friday of the company's investment of $300 million in its Orion Township Mich. assembly plant to produce a new Chevrolet electric vehicle

"We remain open to talking with all affected stakeholders, but our main focus remains on our employees and offering them jobs in our plants where we have growth opportunities", said Flores. Trump called GM CEO Mary Barra on Sunday to urge her to reverse the decision to end production at the OH plant, which is in a crucial state for the 2020 presidential election.

The Chevrolet Bolt EV, Opel Ampera-e, and GM's autonomous vehicles are all built in the Orion plant today alongside the internal combustion Chevrolet Spark. Details on the additional investments will come at a later date, but GM said it plans to add 700 new jobs to other US facilities with the investments.

The new investment will fund the development of a new Chevrolet electric vehicle that will be added to their ranks alongside the Bolt EV. The company has been eager to try to smooth over relations with the White House after Trump first began harshly attacking GM a year ago. GM is in the process of adding 1,000 jobs at the Flint Truck Assembly Plant and new investments at the Lansing Delta Township Assembly Plant and Romulus Propulsion Plant.

The last Chevy Cruze rolled off the Lordstown assembly plant earlier this month with no vehicle to take its place.

Speaking with Fox Business Network at the GM plant in Lake Orion, Michigan, Barra shrugged off the suggestion that the company is trying simply to satisfy Trump by building the new vehicle, the details of which have not been revealed, on US soil. The company has promised to introduce 20 new all-electric vehicles globally by 2023. Of those, more than 1,400 were in Lordstown, which the company says it will close as it winds down production of the Chevrolet Cruze.

In November, GM announced plans to shut the four US factories and one in Canada.

Details on the new vehicle were not revealed, including when it will go on sale, but GM said it will use an "advanced version" of the Bolt's architecture, which underpins the $37,495 compact utility vehicle with a battery pack that provides 238 miles of range per charge.

"There are a significant number of U.S.jobs that go to that product".

Barra was joined at the event by community and union leaders, including UAW Vice President Terry Dittes.

This week he urged the company to reopen the Lordstown, Ohio auto plant or sell it to someone who would. The state helped push him to victory in 2016, and Trump has focused on Lordstown, seldom mentioning the other USA factories that GM is slated to close.

"We want to create jobs, good paying jobs", Barra said, saying her talks with Trump had a "business focus".

"General Motors is committed to supporting US manufacturing, including the great states of OH and MI", said Barra, who maintains that she sees no further layoffs or plant closures through the end of 2020.
