Security researchers discover iOS version of Android-targeted spyware

Now, the spyware known as Exodus has an iOS version. A work profile can now be used to register for Find My Device, and if a user locks his device remotely, he is prompted to perform a security update.

Once successfully installed, Exodus for Android can carry out an extensive amount of surveillance. Taking a shot at the walled gardens of iOS, the report states "closed platforms lead to distrust and a unsafe false sense of security through obscurity". "After we sent Google a sample of 36 games with inappropriate content for their ratings and a further 16 with other forms of dubious content and permissions, including some which tracked the location of users, 16 games have so far either been entirely removed or re-released with revised ratings and permissions".

Even though some might say that the best thing about using an Android powered smartphone is the fact that it offers a premium user experience, we believe that it's actually the millions of apps and mobile games that Android fans can access.

"The Apple Developer Enterprise program is meant to allow organizations to distribute proprietary, inhouse apps to their employees without needing to use the iOS App Store", Lookout researchers explained. While it is hard to bypass Apple's App Store, it seems the developer abused their Apple-issued Developer Enterprise program certificates to infect unsuspecting victims.

The iOS version of Exodus did not technically invade the iOS since it is only available for download from third-party phishing sites. You can simply install and launch the application and get started with unlimited apps download.

What is Apple doing to eliminate the risk?

Researchers from Lookout had contacted Apple about the malware, and the company has revoked the app's enterprise certificate. Once the handset has been updated, they will also get an "All good!"

How can iPhone users avoid danger?

"In terms of capabilities on the iOS side, they're doing pretty much everything I'm aware of that you can do through documented Apple APIs, but they're abusing them to do surveillance-type activities", Adam Bauer, a senior staff security intelligence engineer at Lookout, told Wired.
