Jordan Henderson: My chat with Jurgen Klopp about new Liverpool FC role

Liverpool Klopp Henderson

The Reds captain recently said he had been badgering Klopp to allow him more freedom to break into the final third and, after scoring as a second-half substitute at Southampton last Friday, he started and delivered a killer pass that led to Roberto Firmino's second goal.

On the pitch, Liverpool are in first place in the Premier League with five matches left to play.

Henderson has been with Liverpool since 2011 and he was considered by many as the long-term replacement for Steven Gerrard.

Henderson is a naturally energetic player, at his best when he can go and close opponents down but being a holding midfielder for club and country has meant that he has had to add discipline and restraint to his game. "We've not used him there for 3.5 years - sorry about that!" grinned Klopp.

For most of the season, Jordan Henderson has played in a deep-lying midfielder's role for Liverpool but against Southampton, the England global came on in the second half and totally changed the game while playing in a more advanced role.

It says much about Henderson's approach to leadership, his relationship with Klopp as well as the manager's willingness to listen to alternative sources as he tries to find solutions that he felt able to discuss the possibility of him taking on different responsibilities that were nevertheless familiar to him. I felt good playing in that position.

It is the arrival of Fabinho that has freed Henderson up to be more attacking, with the Brazilian now making the defensive shielding position his own and arguably a more natural fit.

"We knew we had to play the second game and we can not decide the tie tonight, so now we have to go there and fight again".

"In the last couple of years there hasn't really been a player like Fabinho in that role so I've had to adapt to that role". I can do both positions and he sees I can do both.

He said: "We scored two goals and controlled the ball most of the time".

"I just thought that might give me a bit more license to get forward more".
