American Airlines cancels summer flights as Boeing 737 Max fears persist

The Max aircrafts have been grounded since mid-March.

Southwest Airlines announced on Thursday that it has modified its schedule to account for the 737 MAX aircraft being grounded into the first week of August.

A total of 21 United Nations staffers and 12 aid workers were killed.

American Airlines announced Sunday that it will extend its cancellations of Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft through the summer months. Boeing is, therefore, going to either have to convince people to fly the 737 Max or build a replacement.

Donald Trump, who owned the Trump Shuttle airline from 1989 to 1992 and is an aviation enthusiast, weighed in with his own advice.

The model has suffered two deadly crashes in a matter of months, the first last October in Indonesia with the death of all 189 people on board and then in Ethiopia on March 10, killing all 157 aboard.

"What do I know about branding, maybe nothing (but I did become President!)", Trump tweeted at 6.29 a.m. ET. "But again, what the hell do I know?", he added.

The damaged sensor went on to trigger inaccurate data and resulted in the pilots turning the anti-stall software - known as MCAS - off, but it re-engaged and pushed the jet downwards.

Airlines are being forced to ground their planes longer than expected after Boeing and the FAA said the company needs more time to complete changes to a flight-control system suspected of playing a role in the crashes.

Boeing has been developing a software upgrade for an anti-stall system under scrutiny in two recent crashes.

American explained on its website that not all flights previously scheduled on a Max would be cancelled, because the airline plans to substitute other aircraft for some flights. The FAA have convened a meeting on April 12 with safety representatives of the three US -based airlines that have the Boeing 737 MAX in their fleets, as well as the pilot unions for those airlines.

Boeing has said it aims to finish fixing the planes in late April, and any changes would have to be submitted to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the USA and foreign regulators for approval.

Ivanka Trump today honored the victims of the Ethiopian Airlines crash by attending a special ceremony and laying a wreath in the country's capital Addis Ababa during her tour of Africa.
