Donald Trump is giving his good friend Tiger Woods one of this nation's highest honors following his victory at the 2019 Masters: The Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Woods' one-shot victory at Augusta National capped off an awesome and lengthy comeback from personal setbacks and physical ailments.

A green jacket, a fat pay cheque and a restored reputation aren't the only rewards Tiger Woods will receive after winning his fifth Masters, capping one of the greatest comebacks in sports history.

The president is an avid golfer who played a round with Woods at Trump's golf club in Jupiter, Florida, in February.

Woods now has 81 PGA Tour victories. The Medal "recognizes those individuals who have made 'an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors'".

Bush awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Arnold Palmer in 2004. President Barack Obama presented the Medal of Honor to pioneering black golfer Charlie Sifford in 2014.

Mr. Trump owns a dozen golf courses in the USA and frequently spends his weekends at his clubs in Florida, Virginia or New Jersey. In 2018, he gave medals to football players Roger Staubach and Alan Page and a posthumous award to baseball player Babe Ruth. "Very exciting, tune in!" the president wrote shortly before Woods won the tournament.
