"I don't trust Barr, I trust Mueller", Pelosi said Wednesday to the Associated Press.

Barr said the legislation is still being reviewed by his office but that he would "much rather. the approach taken by the STATES Act than where we now are".

Although a judge signed the warrant for the surveillance after Page left the campaign, it was controversial because the spying was said to have been based on information provided by Christopher Steele, a former British intelligence agent, whose work was paid for by the Democrats. "I'm not suggesting those rules were violated but I think it's important to look at that", he continued.

Re "We got our answer from Barr so move on" (April 8): I would ask the letter writer one question.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) demanded of Barr to retract his statement, made earlier on Wednesday, that "spying did occur" during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Speaking to reporters at the White House on Wednesday morning, the Republican president railed against the Department of Justice inquiry into whether the Trump campaign had conspired with the Kremlin to sway the 2016 election. "The term "spying" has all kinds of negative connotations and I have to believe he chose that term deliberately".

"I hear [lawmakers] saying you've taken this legal position [that] can have bad policy decision", Barr said.

Hawaii Democrat Brian Schatz, had pointedly given Barr an opportunity to rephrase that, "because when the attorney general of the United States uses the word 'spying, ' it's rather provocative and in my view unnecessarily inflammatory".

He added: "I feel I have an obligation to make sure government power is not abused".

He told the media: "This was an attempted takedown of a president. And we beat them, we beat them", BBC News quoted Donald Trump as saying. And do you know why we fight back?

"Maybe he wasn't listening... but they advised him", Lemon said of the president.

So I mean, we do know that there was some surveillance targeting people involved in the Trump campaign. So do you feel like it carries more weight now when it comes from the attorney general?

The letter said that Mueller did not find a criminal conspiracy between Russian Federation and Trump associates around the time of the 2016 election and that Barr did not believe the evidence in the report was sufficient to prove the president had obstructed justice.

Barr, who was nominated to his post by Trump four months ago, told a Senate appropriations subcommittee that though he did not have specific evidence of wrongdoing, "I do have questions about it".

Barr told a congressional committee on Tuesday these redactions will be colour-coded and accompanied by notes explaining the grounds for withholding information.

Clapper criticized Barr for making the comments.

Barr may have been referring to a surveillance warrant the Federal Bureau of Investigation obtained in the fall of 2016 to monitor the communications of former Trump campaign aide Carter Page, who has not been charged with any wrongdoing.
