Pelosi Requested Security Assessment for Rep. Ilhan Omar Amidst Controversy

On Friday, Mr Trump tweeted "WE WILL NEVER FORGET" alongside a 43-second edited video showing footage of the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks, spliced with a speech by Ms Omar.

Most recently, US President Donald Trump shared a video on Twitter accusing the Democrat representative of being "dismissive" of the September 11th terrorist attacks, interspersing excerpts of her speech with footage of the attacks in NY and Washington DC.

On 23 March, Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar delivered a speech to the Council on American-Islamic Relations (Cair). Omar also said Muslims had "lived with the discomfort of being a second-class citizen and, frankly, I'm exhausted of it, and every single Muslim in this country should be exhausted of it".

She went on to say, "CAIR was founded after 9/11 because they recognized that some people did something and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties".

Congressmember Omar's comments were originally taken out of context and circulated by right-wing media, from The Daily Caller to Fox News.

But her stay has coincided with an ugly war of words that has pitted Trump against the new breed of Democrats like Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar.

"When someone calls out a public official for things they said, it is not endangering their life or inciting violence", Rep. Crenshaw added following claims that Rep. Omar's words were being misconstrued. "It has to stop".

Many critics said her use of "some people did something" minimized the impact of the terror attacks. "They will continue to monitor and address the threats she faces".

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Sunday she had spoken with the House Sergeant at Arms about Omar's safety and that she wanted to make sure a security assessment was being conducted.

Raising her political profile but making her a target of anti-Muslim hate groups, the incident was something of a gift and a curse for Ms Omar.

Donald Trump has been dubbed the "Twitter TWTR President" by some for his favorite form of communication.

The media and twitter attacks on Omar follow the arrest two weeks ago of a right-wing Trump supporter in NY for threatening physical violence against the Minnesota congresswoman.

In a statement released Sunday night, Omar said in the days since Trump tweeted about the speech she gave last month, she has experienced an increase in death threats.

One leading House Democrat, Assistant Speaker Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico, joined in the attack on Omar, telling MSNBC, "Those statements were not only hurtful to me, but extremely hurtful to everyone that was personally impacted by those terrorist attacks".

Pelosi's trip to Europe followed a two-day conference of the House Democratic Caucus at which she was at pains to maintain that the Democrats must continue to work with the Trump administration.

When you compare the vicious backlash over Ms Omar's words to the near non-existent criticism of Bush's, the disparity becomes clear.

Omar mounted a trenchant fightback, tweeting Saturday: "No one person - no matter how corrupt, inept, or vicious - can threaten my unwavering love for America".

"We are all Americans".
