What it means to Christians — Palm Sunday



Catholic parishes and other places of worship, including those in city jails, became gardens of palm fronds on Sunday, April 14, as Holy Week began with the annual observance of Palm Sunday.

On Palm Sunday, the faithful hold blessed palms in commemoration of the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem on a donkey, with people waving palms and olive branches chanting "Hosanna" in greeting.

The cardinal invited all the people present to follow this example and go forth in peace like Jesus.

Palm Sunday is one of many scheduled services during Sacred Heart's 2019 Holy Week. The pope said that "Jesus destroyed his triumphalism by his Passion". The Vatican has announced that the next World Youth Day will be held in Portugal in 2021.

Pope Francis is marking Palm Sunday Mass in St. Peter's Square, which is jammed with tens of thousands of faithful.

Palm Sunday, also known as Passion Sunday, is the first day of Holy Week - the last week of Lent which starts on Palm Sunday and ends on Easter Sunday.

Earlier this month the 82-year-old pope attempted to bring peace to Africa, kneeling and allegedly kissing the feet of the leaders of conflict-torn South Sudan - President Salva Kiir and opposition leader Riek Machar. On Good Friday he will lead the Way of the Cross procession at Rome's ancient Colosseum.
