In the interview, Cerny confirmed the next-gen PlayStation is partially based on PS4 architecture, which means that it is backwards compatible.

The hardware is built around AMD's Ryzen and Navi architectures with the CPU featuring 8 cores built at the 7nm level and the Navi GPU supporting ray tracing as well as 8k graphics.

Cerny declined to comment if there will be a next-generation PlayStation VR unit for the new console. The Wired pointed out that Spider-Man will be able to now load much quicker from 15 seconds to 0.8, for example. However, he did confirm that the PlayStation VR headset as it now exists will be compatible with the next PlayStation console.

PlayStation architect at Sony, Mark Cerny, is hopeful the PS5's feature set will justify the price of the console. Sony has installed a solid-state drive in the PS5 that Cerny claims has a higher raw bandwidth than any SSD you can get for a PC. Cerny fired up 2018's Spider-Man on both a PS4 and a next-gen prototype, and used the fast travel system on both systems to demonstrate how this would speed up load times.

The PS5 specs have been leaked in a Wired interview with PS4 designer Mark Cerny.

That's an impressive package, and it will be interesting to see when and how Microsoft meets that challenge with its next generation console (Nintendo will always be off doing its own thing and being Nintendo). Although the console will support 8K, displaying at this resolution will be dependant on TVs catching up.

According to a Sony spokeswoman, the guidelines are there "so that creators can offer well-balanced content on the platform" and so that gaming "does not inhibit the sound growth and development" of kids.

Cerny reiterates that the "gold standard" of audio is headphone audio, and that this new 3D audio solution on the PS5 will not require external hardware.

8K support and ray-tracing support will ensure your future games will have wonderful lighting while looking fantastic, and 3D audio will be supported as well.

The rest of the specs seem decent, but performance-wise we'll have to wait until Sony's official reveal to see how they'll look in practice.

SIE can officially confirm the information reported in WIRED about our next-generation console, which will continue our efforts to make PlayStation the best place to play.

We'll be bringing you more news on the PlayStation 5 as it becomes available.
