The Sunday Times Rich List has unveiled the names of the north-east's wealthiest people ahead of its publication this weekend.

The list features a record 151 sterling billionaires with a combined wealth of almost £525 billion - a 9.2 per cent rise on previous year.

The figures have led to calls for the super-rich to donate more to good causes.

The Indian-born, London-based industrialists are estimated to be worth £22bn, up £1.35bn on last year's list.

The list, which estimates the 1,000 richest people in the United Kingdom, is based on identifiable wealth including land, property, other assets such as art, and shares in companies, the Sunday Times says. The calculations do not include the amount contained in people's bank accounts.

Hinduja Group has stakes in IT, energy, media, oil and gas, banking, healthcare and property, with the four brothers, Sri, 83, Gopi, 79, Prakash, 73 and Ashok, 68, controlling more than 50 companies.

Sri and Gopi Hinduja saw their fortune increase by 1.356 billion pounds ($1.7 billion) in the previous year to 22 billion pounds, the BBC quoted the list as saying.

In second place are another set of billionaire brothers - David and Simon Reuben.

Meanwhile, the richest person on last year's list, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who founded the Ineos chemicals firm, saw his net worth drop by £2.9bn since last year, the paper says.

Soviet-born businessman Sir Len Blavatnik was fourth-wealthiest, with a fortune put at £14.8bn.The inventor Sir James Dyson was the biggest victor in the list.

Ed Sheeran earned more during 2018 than any musician has in a single year, pushing his fortune up to £160m, making him fifth in the list.

"But numerous rich are nursing big losses after a year of turbulence on the stock market and political deadlock in Westminster".

The wealthiest woman in Britain is Sigrid Rausing, granddaughter of the man who invented the Tetra Pak packaging fortune.

The Sunday Times said one-in-10 of rich people are making plans to protect themselves from hard-left tax increases. She is reportedly worth £12.2bn and ranked sixth. Zimbabwe-born Valerie Moran becomes the first black female entrepreneur ever to make the annual rich list, with a fortune of 122 million pounds from her financial technology business.
