De Ligt has been linked with Liverpool and Manchester United in recent weeks, but the Catalans have always been at the front of the queue for his signature.

The 19-year-old captained the Amsterdam club to the semi-finals of the Champions League this season and all but secured the Eredivisie title on the weekend.

He told Omnisport in March: "Virgil is a player who has experience in the top leagues".

Jurgen Klopp's side are one of many to be linked with De Ligt, and the defender has also hinted at a possible move to Anfield after previously admitting that playing alongside Van Dijk at club level would be great for his development.

Nevertheless, the final negotiations are yet to be known but De Ligt's inclusion in Barcelona's squad will surely bolster the defense line of the club as the Dutch defender has been phenomenal, despite not reaching to his true potential yet.

"He is clearly a player with a bright future ahead of him and is only nineteen years old".

Barcelona are following Matthijs De Ligt since a significant period of time and now seem to finalize the deal to sign the player from Ajax.

"So unfortunately I don't think he's going to go to Liverpool".

"If I were in charge of Manchester City, I would take Maguire over de Ligt. The only difference is the age".

That run nearly continued to the final in Madrid, but a second-half Lucas Moura hat-trick in the semi-final second leg meant De Ligt and his team-mates suffered a heartbreaking last-gasp defeat to Tottenham. "You can only imagine how good he will be when he actually is 29".
