While acknowledging that the city had worse polluting landlords, de Blasio, 58, denied he chose the Trump Tower site for political reasons.

City officials said the president's eight largest NY properties pump out around 27,000 tons of planet-warming gases every ear. The buildings that exceed the new pollution thresholds include Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue, and the Trump Building on Wall Street.

Trump's worst offending building, according to de Blasio, is the Trump International Hotel & Tower at 1 Central Park West, which would pay more than $850,000 if it remains out of compliance with the law in 2030.

Protestors heckled New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio on Monday during a news conference at Trump Tower while he promoted his Green New Deal.

"The Green New Deal, in New York City, and particularly the building mandate legislation, is the most advanced plan on Earth by any city, to address global warming", said de Blasio. We are showing that you can make real, progressive change on the ground here. While in most parts of the United States transportation is the source of most greenhouse gases, in New York City buildings are our main source of emissions.

In April, New York City passed the Climate Mobilization Act, a package of 10 bills aimed at keeping the city compliant with carbon reduction goals outlined in the Paris accord. The landmark Trump property has been called "one of the city's least energy-efficient buildings".

NY is not the only major American city to push its own version of the Green New Deal.

"The good performers won't have to pay any penalties but anything above the threshold has a lot of work to do now", said Mark Chambers, director of the mayor's office of sustainability. "With flames on our hillsides and floods in our streets, cities can not wait another moment to confront the climate crisis with everything we've got". The city has vowed to divest its pension funds of fossil fuel investments and attempted to sue major oil companies for their role in the climate crisis. While deflecting a question about what he brings to a possible campaign as a straight, white male in an increasingly diverse Democratic party, de Blasio did say that he would announce once and for all whether or not he would launch a presidential campaign this week.

De Blasio told his supporters he plans to hold the Trump Organization accountable for what he claims it is doing to harm the environment.

According to a report in the Guardian Monday, eight Trump Organization buildings in New York City are pumping out roughly 27,000 tons of greenhouse gases every year.
