A Nepalese Sherpa climber on Wednesday reached atop Mount Everest for the 23rd time, becoming the only Mountaineer in the world to hold the record for most summits on the world's highest mountain.

Rita, a native of Thame village located in the shadow of Mount Everest, reached the 8,850-metre (29,035-feet) summit with other climbers via the Southeast Ridge route on Wednesday morning, tourism department official Mira Acharya said from the base camp.

On May 16, 2018, Kami Rita made history by summiting Everest for the 22nd time.

Acharya said Kami, who goes by his first name, reached the top at 7.50 a.m. (0205 GMT) and is now descending to lower camps.

Talking to media before leaving for Everest, the tireless Sherpa had articulated his intent to retire from climbing after he scales Everest for 25th times.

He broke his own record for most summits of the world's highest mountain.

"I am like a soldier who leaves behind their wives, children, and family to battle for the pride of the country", he told the AP.

Kami Rita made his first ascent of the giant peak in 1994 when he was 24 years old.

Thus, the last year's record of 807 people could be broken, the reached the summit.

Rita has been an advocate for other Sherpa guides, who he said do not get the recognition they are due.

Sherpa tribespeople were mostly yak herders and traders living deep within the Himalayas until Nepal opened its borders in the 1950s.

Alan says that when you get to Everest base camp, you have to spend around four weeks "acclimatising" - that's getting used to the extreme altitude.

Nepal has issued a record 378 permits costing $11,000 each for this year's spring climbing season, sparking fears of bottlenecks enroute to the summit if poor weather cuts down the number of climbing days.

On Tuesday, it was a team of Sherpa guides who again were the first to reach Everest's summit this year, completing their advanced work of setting up ropes and lines.

This season, almost 1,000 people, including 378 paying climbers, will attempt the summit.
