Gareth Southgate will make an exception for Harry Kane and would be prepared to start his captain in the Nations League semi-final against the Netherlands next month, even if the Tottenham Hotspur striker does not begin for his club in the Champions League final.

Southgate plans to leave the England camp to attend the contest between Liverpool and Tottenham that could involve nine of the players he named in an extended 27-man squad on Thursday, giving him the opportunity to make a personal assessment of the players he then hopes can end that 53-year wait for a second global senior trophy.

"I think since the change of manager and the style they play, it's similar to what we ask of our forward players". Equally he could play in the final and not be right five days later for us.

Wright-Phillips, who scored six goals in 36 England appearance, added: "We've never not had the players, but we just never seem to get to the final hurdle for some reason".

"The current squad is definitely good enough to win it and I think Southgate has done a tremendous job with them, and he has utilised the young talents coming through very well". We are keeping that door open.

Southgate previously selected Henderson and Alexander-Arnold for the World Cup in Russian Federation last summer, with Gomez missing out through injury.

"So is it a preference for me that everybody can always see England matches?"

Neither Harry Kane nor Fabian Delph have played since they were injured in a tackle during Tottenham's Champions league first leg with Manchester City on 9 April.

Southgate admitted he was unsure over Kane's fitness, not just for the Nations League but the Champions League final, saying: "That's one of the unknowns".

Youngsters Declan Rice, Jadon Sancho and Ben Chilwell are also included along with Premier League winners Raheem Sterling, Kyle Walker, John Stones and Fabian Delph.

Nathan Redmond was the only surprise inclusion.

However, the latter pair might still be called up to England's U21 squad for the upcoming U21 European Championship.
