While the McLaren GT is based on the Speedtail, a limited production model, it has a more traditional two-seat layout instead of the interesting three-seat configuration.

The Top Gear team had a chance to take a close look at the McLaren GT, as seen in the video above and screengrabs below. Chances are this won't be the last vehicle from Woking to wear the GT name.

At almost 4.7 metres long, the GT is longer than anything in the Sports and Super Series, and the flowing exterior lines takes advantage of that considerable length to great effect. The latter was meant to absorb established Grand Tourer styling cues, while retaining a recognisable "McLaren" aesthetic. The design is much less overtly aggressive than the other models, with more body-coloured bodywork and less contrasting elements giving the auto a calmer, more elegant appearance.

The rear-end is likely to earn the most plaudits, which is appropriate given that's where much of the engineering effort is focused.

Like all McLaren's in the current range, there's a 150-litre front storage compartment that bottoms out at the chassis floor.

The McLaren GT rides on custom Pirelli P ZERO tires created to meet the demands of high-performance driving and comfort and refinement in equal measure.

The real hero though is the new MonoCell II-T carbon fibre monocoque (T for Touring) which incorporates an additional upper structure to permit the creation of the larger void alongside those glazed C-pillars and the rear-quarter windows.

Nappa leather is standard but the automaker said customers can opt for soft-grain leather or Alcantara. The infotainment is "McLaren's most sophisticated yet", consisting of a 7.0-inch infotainment system with HERE navigation and live traffic updates. Among the fastest-operating in any auto, it also features industry-standard Here navigation mapping and real-time traffic information.

To increase passenger comfort, a new damping control system has been incorporated into the lightweight aluminium suspension set-up.

Likewise, McLaren says the GT has been honed with friendlier road manners especially for use in city-driving.

Powering those wheels is yet another variation of the 4.0-litre V8, the M840TE. One other detail of note regarding this motor is how McLaren explains the engine has more than 95 percent of its peak torque available between 3,000 and 7,250 rpm - certainly something that will help towards being able to carry the car's weight easily.

It will go toe-to-toe with Bentley's Continental GT and Aston Martin's DBS Superleggera upon its arrival in Australian showrooms "within this year", although McLaren's local arm has told GoAuto that pricing is yet to be locked in.

"In short, this is a vehicle that redefines the notion of a Grand Tourer in a way that only a McLaren could". It's derived from the setup given to the 720S, and presents the driver with Comfort, Sport and Track settings.

"The new McLaren GT combines competition levels of performance with continent-crossing capability, wrapped in a lovely body and true to McLaren's ethos of designing superlight cars with a clear weight advantage over rivals", McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt remarked. Suspension, steering and brakes are all bespoke and optimized to provide unforgettable driving experience of a Grand Tourer.

McLaren is trying to make a big breakthrough in the Grand Touring space with its brand new product, the GT, with a combination of a number of attributes.
