2020 Bentley Flying Spur Unveiled As World’s Best “Luxury Grand Touring Sports Sedan”

The grand tourer sedan sibling to the Continental GT also brings a new platform with a longer wheelbase, a new design, more technology, and fluted leather and wood finery.

The stately grille is flanked by same LED matrix headlights as seen on the GT and so are the rear LED taillights. A much wider grille re-establishes proportions up front, as well as a corporate look that goes its own way from the Continental. The latter is a crucial selling point for the Flying Spur in China, which is the largest market for the model alongside the US. Below it, the matrix can be had in black or bright chrome.

A prominent crease emphasizes the shoulders and haunches. And it is electrically retractable and the logo's wings are illuminated as well.

The interior overhaul befits Bentley's move into its second century. A press of a button flips the screen to reveal a panel with three analogue gauges - temperature, compass and chronometer. Those wanting what Bentley calls a "digital detox" can select a third side, which is simply finished in plain veneer matching the rest of the cabin. New vents sit alongside modern features like wireless phone charging and USB ports.

Buyers can choose from an extensive list of Single and Dual Veneer wood options, while seating choices, in addition to 15 different leather hides, include both fluted leather seating and the distinctive Mulliner Driving Specification diamond quilting, as well as a world first in the form of three-dimensional diamond quilted leather door inserts. Also on the extra-cost menu, a full-length panoramic glass roof with an inset sunroof.

Drivers will appreciate the benefits of safety systems like Traffic Assist, City Assist, blind spot warning, night vision, a heads up display, top view camera, and self-parking capabilities. A Bang & Olufsen upgrade offers 1,500W and 16 speakers, while a new Naim 2,200W system is the flagship with 19 speakers.

The engine is paired with an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox that promises to deliver smooth and refined acceleration, quicker gearshifts and improved fuel economy. The 48-volt electronic architecture varies anti-roll bar stiffness to maintain a level attitude. The three-chamber air springs-similar to those fitted to the Continental GTs-have 60 percent more capacity, allowing for finer degrees of adjustment, and the 48-voly anti-roll system uses electric motors to twist the rollbars against the cornering loads keeping the vehicle flat through turns. At low speed, the system steers the rear wheels in the opposite direction from the front wheels.

Although the Flying Spur is all-wheel drive, the torque split is resolutely biased to the rear: Comfort and Normal modes allow a maximum of 38 percent of the torque to be sent to the front wheels, but selecting Sport mode caps that at 17 percent. Brake-based torque vectoring manages transverse power.

Bentley hasn't announced pricing for the new Flying Spur, but the luxury sedan will be available for order beginning this fall.
