The 43-year-old arrived in Boston on Monday night for the surgery and is in stable condition, his wife, Tiffany, said in a statement. She also noted that the former designated hitter was "able to sit up as well as take some steps". According to court documents obtained by the Boston Globe, two men were caught on camera talking in a gray auto on a nearby street before they got on a motorcycle to ride towards the bar, where Ortiz was ambushed while out with friends in his native Santo Domingo. Since then, four more men have been arrested in connection with the shooting, including Rolfy Ferreyra who is believed to be the alleged shooter.

Two of the suspects implicated in Sunday's shooting of Boston Red Sox legend David "Big Papi" Ortiz, including the man who says he pulled the trigger, were being sought for crimes in other states at the time, it has emerged.

Prosecutors have said the two men were seen on security camera footage talking with other people in the Accent and in a Hyundai in a nearby street before the shooting at a popular Santo Domingo bar Sunday night.

"David continues to recuperate today in the Intensive Care Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital under the direction of treating trauma surgeon Dr. David King".

"We guarantee to all Dominicans and to the world that justice will be done".

Also under arrest were Joel Rodriguez de la Cruz, aka Squiddy; Reynaldo Rodriguez Valenzuela, aka The Chinaman; and the suspected driver of the motorcycle, Eddy Vladimir Feliz Garcia, aka The Package.

Ortiz, meanwhile, is still recovering in a Boston hospital.

Ortiz began his career by playing six seasons for the Minnesota Twins (1997-2002), but his career took off after he joined the Red Sox. He was arrested Sunday night and was charged Tuesday as an accomplice to attempted murder. But his attorney, Deivi Solano, told reporters in Santo Domingo his client was a motorcycle taxi driver who was unaware he was driving the suspected gunman and had picked up the fare "in good faith".

"We recognize the symbolism that David Ortiz represents, and we promise that this case will be cleared up completely", Bautista said.

The Dominican newspaper Diario Libre reported on Wednesday that Mirabal Acosta has been connected with a gang of drug dealers and assassins in Santo Domingo Este.
