Uber Eats will test food drone delivery in San Diego Summer 2019

Last year, Uber and the city of San Diego won a bid from the United States Federal Aviation Administration to test food delivery by air. It will cost the same as a standard Uber Eats delivery, but should eventually be quicker, Uber said.

It launched in 2014 and has since grown to count more than 8 million users.

Uber takes to the skies: It's betting on a future where people not only want their food to travel by drone, but also fancy traveling that way themselves.

The service has surpassed the likes of Grubhub and Doordash in terms of its user growth. It placed a Big Mac and fries into specially designed packaging and then flew the food from the restaurant to a designated location where an Uber courier picked up the order to deliver it to the customer.

"We've been working closely with the FAA to ensure that we're meeting requirements and prioritizing safety", said Luke Fischer, Head of Flight Operations at Uber Elevate.

The company says the initial phase of testing in San Diego was done with McDonald's, but that it will be expanded later this year to include more restaurants, including Juniper and Ivy.

To be fair, Volvo is well-known for its commitment to safety, and the self-driving XC90 SUV it has developed in collaboration with Uber is its first production vehicle to roll off the factory floor with autonomous technology ready to go. "When paired with our self-driving technology, this vehicle will be a key ingredient in Uber's autonomous product suite", commented Eric Meyhofer, CEO of Uber Advanced Technologies Group.

In addition to Volvo's built-in back-up systems, an array of sensors atop and built into the vehicle are designed for Uber's self-driving system to safely operate and maneuver in an urban environment.

This follows several prototypes which were built with the goal of sussing out the companies' self-driving vehicle development efforts.

The vehicle is equipped with various backup braking and steering systems, plus a backup battery, all of which should bring the auto to a safe stop if any of its primary systems fail during autonomous driving.
