Yet another poll confirms House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's wisdom in refusing to go along with impeachment of President Trump, despite the baying of the Democratic base.

At a US war cemetery in France, with the gravestones of fallen soldiers in the background, Trump said in a Fox News interview, "I call her Nervous Nancy".

When asked about whether she made the remarks, Pelosi said she would keep what she told fellow Democrats behind closed doors private. Legal experts have said such foreign assistance could violate campaign finance law.

Later in the segment, Trump circled back to Pelosi - this time accusing her of a criminal act for opposing the construction of a southern border wall.

"Did you actually say that, did you actually say that the President, you'd rather see him in prison, ?"

Pelosi called it a "very sad thing" on Thursday, saying all Americans should be "totally appalled" by Trump's comment and repeating her belief that Trump was involved in a "criminal cover-up".

"I think she's a disgrace", he said while in France to mark the 75 anniversary of the D-Day invasion. "This one was brought by Nancy Pelosi".

For part of Trump's presidency, he generally refrained from trash-talking Pelosi as he does many others, but that ended in recent weeks as Democrats intensified their investigations of the president and discussed possibly impeaching him.

The House speaker has consistently downplayed the possibility of impeachment and has outlined a high bar for the criteria she would want to see met before moving forward, including that she would want to see bipartisan support. Mueller has previously said it would be inappropriate to speak further on his report on the probe into allegations of Trump-Russia collusion.

"My obligation is to do whatever we do in the most effective way possible", she responded.
