Penalties from Sergio Ramos and Alvaro Morata and a curling effort from Mikel Oyarzabal on his worldwide debut helped Group F leaders Spain win their fourth-straight qualification game.

"This is a step towards the Euros".

Prior to last year's World Cup in Russia, Spain were breezing through the World Cup qualifiers, recording results such as 4-1 v Israel, 3-0 v Italy and Albania respectively along with demolishing Costa Rica and Argentina in friendlies - 5-0 and 6-1 respectively.

He is the national team's top scorer under coach Luis Enrique, who again was absent for personal reasons.

The hosts continued to wear the dogged Swedes down and they got their breakthrough when visiting defender Sebastian Larsson's outstretched arm blocked the ball and Ramos calmly deceived keeper Robin Olsen to convert from the spot.

Victory means Spain stay top of Group F, now five points clear of second-placed Sweden, with four wins out of four.

Kepa Arrizabalaga has insisted he was "surprised" to keep his place as Spain goalkeeper for their 3-0 win against Sweden ahead of David de Gea.

Monday marked Ramos' 165th appearance with the national team - two fewer than another Casillas record. First Morata, on for Asensio, drew a foul from Filip Helander with an aggressive run into the box and, after Ramos deferred, struck the penalty into the corner.

"It's not one concrete moment when we decided it, but we started commenting the lineup a long time ago, and then when you have all the info on your hands, that's what gives you the last push to take the decision". "I have never played two matches in a row for Spain".

Rodrigo had a goal disallowed for offside in the first half, and Francisco "Isco" Alarcon came close with an uncontested shot from inside the area that just missed early in the second half.

"I talked to Luis Enrique on Friday, right before the game, and we chatted about it".

"Of course, we are in search of a fixed group, but it would not be good to have one [starting] team".

Luis Enrique has been working remotely from his home in Barcelona, receiving video feeds of practices and meeting his assistants virtually.

Qualifying will resume in September, with Spain playing at Romania, and Sweden visiting the Faeroe Islands.
