Surya Grahan or Solar Eclipse 2019 India During a solar eclipse the Moon actually casts two shadows towards Earth

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon is between the Sun and Earth so that the visible disk of the Sun is blocked by the Moon casting a shadow on the Earth's surface.

This year's eclipse will be visible mostly to people living in the Southern Hemisphere. "Each glimpse we get of the Sun during a total solar eclipse-only a couple of minutes every 18 months or so-gives us a different set of features to look at", says Pasachoff.

How does the total solar eclipse occur?

Skywatchers in parts of Chile and Argentina will see the Moon pass directly in front of the Sun, blocking out the light for just a few minutes.

The total solar eclipse will be visible across parts of South America and the South Pacific.

THIS WEEK a total solar eclipse will take place, the only one of 2019.

The so-called eclipse fever was a national phenomenon in 2017 as millions of Americans enjoyed one of the rarest and most spectacular celestial events that can be seen with the naked eye. "It is only when these two planes line up, known as the nodes of the moon's orbit, that we can see an eclipse somewhere on Earth".

Though first-hand viewing is limited, different observatories such as the Cerro Tololo Observatory and La Silla Observatory, both in Chile, will have a live webcast of the eclipse.

Countries nearby such as Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Ecuador will be able to witness a partial eclipse, as only part of the Sun will be blocked.

Totality represents a unique opportunity for scientists who study the sun.

The solar eclipse will reach its moment of so-called maximum eclipse around 8.24pm United Kingdom time or 3.24pm EDT.

"You're completely mesmerised by totality", says astronomer Patrick McCarthy. This year's Mercury Transit will be the last one until 2032.

According to Space.com, the starting point of the eclipse will be from 4,000 km east-northeast of Wellington, New Zealand, from where it will make the second landfall reaching central Chile. The corona or the sun's atmosphere is where solar weather and solar winds are prominent.

During totality, it is safe to view a solar eclipse. It will, again, be visible from Chile and Argentina.
