Supplemental Draft: How high of a pick will Jalen Thompson cost?

It's not a complete surprise, because the Chiefs had some of the lowest priority in the supplemental draft order. According to Tony Pauline of Draft Analyst, the Packers flew safety Jalen Thompson to Green Bay on Tuesday to conduct medical evaluations and have him meet with team officials in advance of Wednesday's supplemental draft. However, he ended up getting selected in the fifth round by the Arizona Cardinals.

Unlike the normal draft that has already taken place, whichever team that drafts Thompson would have to forfeit a future draft pick from the next draft depending on what round the player is selected in this upcoming supplemental draft. First one off the board.

Under general managers Jerry Reese and Ernie Accorsi (1997-2017) the Giant did not select a player in the Supplemental Draft.

Thompson was a three-time all-conference selection at WSU who finished his career with 190 tackles, six interceptions, 17 passes defended and five fumble recoveries.

The Packers could use more depth at safety, even after using a first-round pick on Darnell Savage. Detroit drafted Will Harris in the third round in April for that kind of role and also has Pro Bowl alternate Quandre Diggs capable of playing either position at a high level, so the urgency to pull the trigger on Thompson doesn't seem high.

The Cardinals had an open spot on the 90-man roster after releasing cornerback David Amerson at the conclusion of offseason workouts. He and West Virginia wide receiver Marcus Simms are considered the likeliest selections. While they may have benefitted from adding a guy like Thompson, it was sensible for them to avoid the risk and keep their 2020 assets in place, especially given that the team is now lacking a second-round pick in next year's draft.

It's increasingly possible that GM Brian Gutekunst and the Packers will submit a bid for Thompson on Wednesday.

Simms brings considerable off-field baggage and that makes him a poor fit for the Lions. It will be interesting to see if the Packers decide to try and sign him.
